First settled by Mormon Pioneers in 1864 Panguitch is a Paiute Indian word, meaning "Big Fish." Crops froze before the harvest that year leaving the settlers without food for the long winter. A group of 7 men volunteered to go over the mountain through deep snow to an established settlement and obtain flour to feed the starving residents. They used quilts to support themselves as they trudged over the soft snow; the inspiration for our annual Quilt Walk Festival. More Local History... |
